Founding Valley Geotechnical
Narayan Abhyankar is the founding principal of Valley Geotechnical Engineering Services Ltd. In 1995, after working in the engineering field for 20 years, he decided it was time to explore the market himself. Having the initial goal of creating a multi-disciplinary engineering company, Valley Geo has grown into a Geotechnical firm that continues to expand and create relationships with fellow engineering companies. What drew Narayan to the field of Geotechnical Engineering was its newness of life. Having only officially begun in 1925, geotechnical engineering continues to grow as knowledge is being obtained through further research and experience.
Working at Valley Geotechnical
Currently at Valley Geo, Narayan’s duties include the mentoring of staff as well as being a client liaison. With years of varied experience and knowledge, Narayan provides his mentees with critical thinking; a useful tool in the ever-changing field of Geotechnical Engineering. He also continues, on a smaller basis, completing projects with clients. Through his years at Valley Geo, Narayan has presented seminars on geotechnical issues to various municipalities in the Lower Mainland.
When asked what Narayan thinks about Valley Geotechnical as a company;
“This is a family, an extension of home. A place that is comfortable and non-competitive. A trusting environment within our team and with the clients. Companies, like Valley Geo, are like your hand. Everyone has a job and has different strengths and weaknesses but you improve and compensate for each other and work as a team. A hand with only thumbs is no hand at all”.
Education & Experience
Prior to forming Valley Geo, Narayan managed projects and staff for Dames and Moore, Golder Associates, and AMEC (previously Hardy Associates). Narayan offers over 40 years of experience in value-added geotechnical solutions. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology with a Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) and has taken Masters (M.Eng) courses in geotechnical engineering at the University of Ottawa. Narayan is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. His contribution to the Association has earned him the title Fellow Engineer, and Geoscientist, of Canada (FEC, FGC)
The advice that Narayan would give to those getting into a career;
“Doesn’t matter what you do for a living but, whatever it is, do it with passion and enjoyment. Do something that makes you feel accomplished, something that makes you want to get up and go to work every day because you enjoy it. Wealth is not measured in dollars but in knowledge, your pursuit of knowledge should be the ultimate goal”.
Outside of Work
Over the past five years, the company has been transitioning to employee ownership. This has given Narayan more time to spend with his family and travelling. Narayan also enjoys oil on canvas painting in the impressionist style. Over the past eight years, two well-known BC painters have been tutoring Narayan. All the sales proceeds from his oil paintings go to a foundation helping poor, exceptional high school and university students with funding for their education.
