Working at Valley Geotechnical

Joel Blanco joined the Valley Geo team in November 2016 as a Geotechnical Engineer. He writes and reviews reports, makes schedules, designs for; septic systems, storm water management, and retaining walls. Joel also completes field work doing foundation and excavation reviews. His years of experience in geotechnical engineering provides him with the knowledge to assist the technologists in the office. Joel continues to expand his knowledge and area of work as he is now getting into pre-load design.

When asked what he thinks about working at Valley Geo;

“The people here are open and easy to approach. They are a fun team to work with. It’s a great place to work”.

Education & Experience

Joel graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in the Philippines. He worked as a Professional Engineer (Civil) in California before moving to Edmonton, Alberta, where he specialized in Geotechnical Engineering. Joel switched into specializing in Geotechnical Engineering because he enjoys the specificity and field work of Geotechnical compared to civil. Working in two Geotechnical firms has diversified his knowledge. In Edmonton he would commonly do commercial projects while at Valley Geo he mostly works with residences/subdivisions. Joel is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) of The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia and Alberta.

The advice that he would give to those getting into a job field;

“Be sure that you like what you do. Have fun in your job or else it will be long days, everyday”.

Outside of Work

Joel spends all of his non-work time with his wife and son. He loves to drive and take road trips as well as go biking and running with them.
