Working at ValleyGeo
Sammy Cheng is a Senior Geotechnical Technologist at ValleyGeo. He started working at ValleyGeo in 2012. He coordinates various construction projects, covering commercial and residential buildings, parks, schools, and subdivision developments within the Lower Mainland. Sammy’s work encompasses investigation, design, and inspection for foundations, retaining walls, roads, erosion and sediment control, storm drainage systems, and slope reinforcement. He also works with clients; building relationships and providing his knowledge and experience to their project. Over the years, Sammy has developed an even stronger ability in both material testing and construction techniques.
When asked about working at Valley Geotechnical;
“I enjoy discussing and examining different engineering problems with my colleagues. I also appreciate the way our team can constructively challenge each other and create better solutions”.
Education & Experience
Sammy was a carpenter before working at ValleyGeo. As a carpenter he would demolish, clean up, build foundation, do the framework, and final work on the houses. In 2011, he graduated from BCIT with his Civil Engineering Diploma. Sammy learned about ValleyGeo when he attended a professional’s night at BCIT. During this event he talked with a variety of professionals from the engineering field including a previous employee at ValleyGeo. Due to this discussion he applied for a position, got an interview, and a job at ValleyGeo. Sammy is a certified Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T) by the Applied Science Technologist and Technicians of British Columbia since 2015. In 2013, he was also certified as a British Columbia Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (BC-CESCL). Sammy also completed as of January 2018 training with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Services Inc. in a course on Portable Moisture/Density Gauge RSO.
The advice that he would give to those getting any into a career;
“Value yourself. You don’t know what you are capable of. Treat yourself better, you deserve it”.
Outside of Work
Sammy enjoys cooking, drawing, and playing sports. In the past few years, he has completed numerous half-marathons and triathlons.
